THE ENGLAND DILEMMA 6-12-07
Since England's humiliating defeat against Croatia, I have received a record number of emails into the show regarding the future of the national side.
Here I answer your correspondence:
From: Mike Sell
What did you think of that 'spineless' performance by England last week?
It just amazed me that Steve wanted to carry on. It must be the most thankless job in the whole of the UK and with the way the English tabloids are desperate for a 'sacrificial-lamb', he must be crazy!
Tell me, who would want to be manager of England?
Being brutally honest, I can't say that I feel angry. When you are second best on almost every 'blade of grass' on the field then how can you be angry???
Let's face it, English football needs a radical overhaul starting from the top down to the grass roots. This includes the administration and senior levels of FA management.
Why not take a whole bunch of our rising stars away from the UK and school/train them in a "European culture", enter them into a Euro league under a club structure agreement and let them develop equal to the Europeans?
This might improve our technical abilities like first touch, being comfortable on the ball, being able to pass well and strategically, being better students of the game.
Also they'd be away from this hysterical negative atmosphere surrounding English footie - it's poison when you look at it from the outside in!
Oh and maybe we can 'incentivise' (is that a word?) a few of their salaries a little and get them back into the real World like the rest of us...
Cheers
Mike
Jeff's reply
We need someone speaking and acting the sense you have spoken to run things in this country.
It is a long job and it would take a generation for it to succeed. Thereby lies the problem, today instant success is demanded and people will not wait.
Best wishes

Alright mate
English football is in the gutter and I can see repercusions in the Premier League now that England have been knocked out. We are sick to death of these bloody foreigners killing our game.
Jeff, how the bloody hell can us fans get our game back with British based players?
Paul
Jeff's reply
A complete overhaul of the game, from school football upwards is what is required. We need to teach players how to play and give them the technical skills that the foreigners have.
The fans have had enough. Perhaps the Boro fans are ahead of the game and are are voting not only against Boro but the state of football in general.
Best wishes

From: Steve in Catterick
All the talk about Mourinho and Wenger taking the England job is a
joke. Neither know anything about English players and are only producing
results with foreign players and an open cheque book.
English players are a joke!
Jeff's reply
They know everything about English players Steve. That is exactly why
they sign players with technical ability and the right attitude!
Best wishes

Hi Jeff
Good on you! It's time the so-called English players got the blame.
How
many managers do we have to go through before the penny drops?
Our
players do not seem to play with pride for their country. It's all about
money.
Sandra
Jeff's reply
You heard my rant on air I take it. I agree with you 100% Sandra.
Money
has killed the game, too many average players are millionaires now and
don't look as if they care.
Best wishes
Jeff

From: Aaron Jack
Who is going to be the next England Manager?
Steve McClaren is going to be coming back to the Boro.
Jeff's reply
Hi Aaron
The England job is a poisoned chalice, who would want it? The manager is
important but the players have to ask themselves a few questions also.
McClaren for Boro I very, very, very much doubt.
Best wishes
Jeff
