HARTLEPOOL v COLCHESTER UNITED MATCH PROGRAMME NOTES 9-8-08
Here we go again with another ten months of mixed emotions.
A home game on the opening day of the season then a home draw in the Carling Cup is as good a start as anyone could wish for.
However, the next four days will tell us a lot about Pools' chances this season.
The bookies have written the boys off as they are 50/1 for the League. More worryingly, however, is that they are joint second favourites for the drop.
They say that the bookies don't often get it wrong. On this occasion though, not only can they get it wrong but at those odds I am sure a few of the faithful will be having a flutter.
In fact, if they play the football they played at times last season only with fewer errors at the back, those odds could represent excellent value.
Today's opponents will fancy their chances for a swift return to the Championship. They look to have spent a few bob and will be difficult opponents.
They are a reminder to Pools as to what can be achieved. They are a similar sized club that accommodated themselves very well at a level that Pools were only a few minutes away from a couple of seasons ago.
As I mentioned on numerous occasions last season, it is all about money now so hopefully a bumper crowd will see Pools get off to a good start and keep the fans coming back for more.
This is especially true for Tuesday night. A good run in the Carling Cup is important, not only for confidence, but also for revenue.
I would love to think that we will see a couple of penalties today - maybe one at each end - with a miraculous save from the Pools keeper and also a goal for Pools.
We saw the daftest penalty ever awarded against Swansea last season but how many times did we see holding offences go unpunished in the box?
I know from experience that on many occasions the all-in wrestling that happens at corners and free kicks could be given either way.
But as we saw at the Euros, if refs are brave enough to give them then the players are a little bit more wary about tugging opponents' shirts.
It may mean a little bit more controversy early on in the season, but if the message gets across then surely it will make for better games.
As you will be aware, I was the subject of a summer transfer also. Despite the success of my shows, my former station did not have the budget to continue with them. Just like football eh, it's all about money!!
Some will be questioning my decision to join a station based in Darlington but of all of the broadcasters I spoke to, they were the ones who were genuinely interested in football outside of the Premier League.
Therefore I hope that Poolies will continue to tune in and give their very loud and opinionated views of their club. You know you will continue to get my honest and forthright views, then, if you don't agree with me, I will cut you off!!
Haha another ten months of aggro. Can't wait.
Enjoy the game.
