Geordie Backlash? Mate, what did you expect writing stuff like that? I am a Geordie living in New Zealand and I could feel the welling up of our anger from here!
You condemn the use of racist language then refer to 'Geordie dickheads'. That is using a reference to someones group or race. Everyone gives everyone stick and Mido responded in the right way by scoring and giving it back to the fans.
We would have loved that and respected him for it no one else needs to get involved. Trying to use your website to stoke up ill feeling between Boro and the Toon will only lead to trouble between the fans when we next meet and writing about it from the comfort of your office then sitting back while it all gets out of hand isn't gonna help.
I am glad you have done a little climbdown, but Jeff you are in a privilleged position and maybe should have a little think how strongly you should be wording things and what effect your words might have.
I personally think you were not a bad ref and it's good to hear opinions of people who were in the game but I was suprised at your tone and I don't think you have done yourself any favours or added any credibility to your future comments.
It's the job of intelligent people in this day and age to heal rifts not widen them.
Jeff's reply
I take on board your points Dale.
Let's hope the one thing good to come out of this is that some people will think again next time before opening their mouths.
Best Wishes

Just read your article regarding Dalington on the Uncovered Site and you were asking for comments regarding the lack of attendance. I can only speak for myself and those of us who used to go but here goes...
We used to watch Darlington as season ticket holders at times from 1989 onwards. Surely the whole point of lower league football is to stand in a small ground which is fairly full and atmospheric. We used to love it at Feethams where me, my dad and my brother used to go. 1999/2000 season was fantastic with a great atmosphere.
Since moving to the new ground though it has totally lost its appeal, out of town, 22,000 empty seats, no atmosphere at all etc.
The three of us have stopped going altogether now for this reason and know of others who have too. The new ground has alienated some of the hardcore fanbase while moving towards a family entertainment day, fair enough I suppose but its not why we watched them for years for.
If I wanted to watch substandard football in amognst thousands of empty seats I'd of been born a Boro fan.
Cheers Martyn
Jeff's reply
Good points mate, I agree that the all seaters have killed atmosphere.
Last comment a bit harsh, though !!!

Your hasty response to your initial Newcastle posting must be evidence enough that your comments were way off the mark! Since football began fans have chanted hurtful and shameful remarks to opposing players, it's part of the healthy match day craic that your wholeheartedly endorse!
I'm astonished that this incident has irked you so much that you felt the need to pen such a tabloid style article (brown ale addled Geordie is really the best you can come up with?). Surely you must have realised that there would have been a backlash to your comments?
You refer to schoolyard days and rhyming players names with things like knob, Jeff every song sung by footballs fans has a tenuous link it's what prevents in from turning into rugby!
Guilt by association and Geordie dickheads?! Your fueling the fire. I was at a game last season when the abuse Emre received was unbelievable, however he dealt with it in the mannner of a professional and not by inciting the fans in question. I haven't read anyone condoning his actions.
Mido is by no means an angel, infact he is a perfect example of a game gone made with greed but can you tell me how the abuse was racist? It refered to his religion Jeff not his colour and the last time I checked the religion rulebook anybody could be a muslim!
Surely the abuse the Boro fans receive concerning their past history with children warrants a more lenghty response?
You've dealt with abuse throughout your career so there is no point throwing insults at you, I just wish that people like yourself would weigh up both sides of the argument before piling in with the sensationalist remarks. Whether you like it or not your "inciteful" comments have put you at the same level as those "scumbags" you despise.
Jeff's reply
You make good points Andy, yes I may have been hasty with the original article and might have drawn personal abuse towards myself, but if we return to banter rather than the vindictive stuff, then maybe it was worthwhile.

Hi Jeff
Just to say a Big Thank You and to let you know my two lads had a day at the Riverside that left them in utter awe in the Hardwick Suite.
Matt Emerson pushed the boat out for them.
I told Matt they would be dressed to match every section, but they decided not to visit the Legend's lounge after the game.
The Referee had an excellent game, but as is always the case, there was not the slightest acknowledgement to such by anyone.
Quick to criticise, slow to praise is the ongoing conclusion, because Mike Dean scored eight out of ten in my paper, which was the highest given mark on the pitch.
Best wishes
Peter
Jeff's reply
Pleased that the boys enjoyed the game Peter. You make good points about Mike Dean, but the referee is easy to chastise and people rarely offer praise. Hope that you continue to contribute to the shows. Your phone call epitomized to me everything that being a Boro fan is all about.
We will continue to have tickets to give away live on air for Darlo, Pools and Boro throughout the season.
Best Wishes

All the best with this site, but its not up to date. Your blogs are
not
current which defeats the object. Boro Nation and ComeOnBoro are bang up to
date.
Jeff's reply
Hi Fletch. Thanks for your comments. I have been away for a couple of
days
therefore my blogs have not been updated. That is the problem with
being a
sole man outfit; the other sites do have scores of contributors so have
the
scope to be continuously posting new items. That being said I do not
want to
just write items for the sake of it.
Having said that in normal circumstances there is a new posting
virtually
every day.
I hope that you continue to visit the site and are happy with its
content.

From: Suresh Nair, 26th August 2007
Dear Jeff Winter
Greetings from Singapore!
This sounds unbelievable but this news is hogging the headlines this morning...and I want your learned opinion on this:
AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani wants referees to use spray paint to show where a wall should stand on free kicks.
Milan midfielder Clarence Seedorf was booked in a row about players not retreating the 10 metres in Sunday's Serie A opener at Genoa , which the European champions won 3-0.
"In Brazil the referees use spray paint to fix the position of the wall on free kicks," Galliani told Monday's Gazzetta dello Sport.
"After a few minutes you can't see the line drawn with the spray. I hope that in Italy we can implement the same system which works very well in Brazil."
What's your "colourful" view on this, Jeff?
Appreciatively.
Suresh Nair
Jeff's reply
Is it April Fool's day today? Funnily enough I heard something like this several years ago, only that time it was putting down disks. There is enough in the laws of the game now to ensure that the "wall" goes back ten yards. Ref marches it out then players stay behind it.
We know that they go back very slowly and then creep forward, but drawing a line would surely take longer. A simple solution to the problem would be a few yellow cards when the wall does mot go back or breaks early.
Still that may upset the players and the clubs and we would not want to do that would we?
Best wishes

With everyone clamouring for goal line technology (referees excluded)
what
other major innovation would you like to see introduced into the Laws
of
Association Football, if any.
Keep up the good work Jeff
Jeff's reply
Only two things I think. Firstly independent time keeping like they
have in
Rugby League and also the reintroduction of the ten yard advancement
following dissent. Chelsea would end up defending their goal line all
game!

From Geoff Janes, 24th August 2007
As a grassroots referee myself I think it is disgraceful what Keith
Hackett
has done to Rob Styles.
To be honest, the greatest thing about football is the fact that the
referee
can get it wrong. If Mr Hackett wishes to suspend Mr Styles for a
mistake
then so be it, but refereeing is part of the game.
If a player makes a
mistakes- missed an open goal, he doesn't get half the abuse that the
referee gets. Therefore I don't see why Mr Hackett should be giving
people
ammo to use at grassroots referees ("I'm going to get you suspended"
etc)
when a referee has made a mistake. An honest mistake.
Jeff's reply
Excellent points, well made Geoff. I feel sure that the majority of
referees
would concur with our thoughts. From your position as a referee and
also
through your business you will probably fully appreciate the politics
that
go on in the world of refereeing. It is probably worse for the guys at
the
top than throughout the system in general, that is saying something
mind
you.

I unfortunetly am a Boro fan living in the south of England. I don't
get to
many games due to the nature of my job. However I firmly believe that
more
fans (those lucky enough to have tickets) should get behind the team
and
show passion at every opportunity. We need all the support we can get
since
the rest of the league seems intent to kick us while we are down.
Don't you think that if it hadn't been for Mr Gibson ten years ago there woundn't be
a
Boro to shout about?
Jeff's reply
Hi Cliff,
You are 100% right in my opinion mate. Trouble is we have a new breed
of fan
who came on board after the move to the Riverside. They are not fully
aware
of 1986 or the real history and meaning of being a true supporter.
There is
a "prawn sandwich" brigade at every club and we have our fair share of
moaners.
Let's just hope that the majority of fans like yourself will outweigh
the
dissenters and that we can continue to box above our weight.

From Peter Owen, 23rd August 2007
Hi Jeff,
Laurie Sanchez's Fulham will no doubt be involved in a goal line
decision
which favours them and
he will then say "From where I was positioned I couldn't see a thing."
Same old song Jeff, which is why cameras must never ever be introduced
into
the game, because how many balls get kicked off the goal line for
starters
every season?
Cameras would kill the excitement and the only way forward is for both
the ref and his assistants to work as a team and share their observations more openly, when the
need
arises.
You cannot give what you haven't seen, but the recent issue involving
Rob
Styles didn't surprise me one bit, because his positional senses are
non-existent, which makes him over react.
However, his biggest flaw in my opinion is that he is over tensed and
needs
to relax inside the rules
and enjoy the game, because the man in the middle is also in charge of
the
tension.
Am I off-side or on-side?
Jeff's reply
In my opinion Peter you are very much on side. I am in favour of goal
line
technology but all aspects of outside video assistance I am not in
favour
of.
It is very interesting to hear your views of Rob Styles. I have spoken
to a
few players in the last couple of days and they too have problems with
his
personality. I know the guy and can concur with the general perception.
He is fit and a capable referee but perhaps his bosses instead of
slagging
and humiliating him in public should perhaps be assisting him and
helping
him improve his image.
Best wishes
Jeff

From Harry, 23rd August 2007
Hi Jeff,
Rather than waiting for goal line technology etc. why can't the powers
that
be simply have an extra official behind each goal, whose sole remit is
anything that happens in and around the penalty box? A set of eyes in a
position that neither the referee or AR can ever have.
Things that could be useful to the referee include;
1) help at corners and frees with jostling, shirt pulling and other
interference
2) handball, was it deliberate, was it even seen given the number of
bodies that can obscure the ref's view etc.
3) One on one's with the keeper taking someone down; was it a clear
goalscoring opportunity etc.
4) Did a player drag his feet into an oncoming keeper to induce a
penalty
(this bugbear of mine should be a red card for the attacker for
deliberately
kicking an opponent!)
5) Did the ball cross the line, what better angle can you get?
6) Simulation in the box (which should be upgraded to a red card
offence,
but that's another argument)
Apart from the fact that it would be real time assistance, it would
only
require two more officials, as opposed to having possibly a TV or
'chip'
official and a myriad of support technicians. Thus it could be
implemented
at every level. I know finding five officials for Sunday league might be a
bit
much, but it's still a damn sight less than finding cameras,
installing
'chip' technology or whatever. Hell I'd do it for free if it meant
getting the important decisions right, which is what everyone wants.
With the pace of the modern game, and the sums of money involved, it
should
be a priority to give the referees all the help they can get. With so
many
incidents happening in the box with the referee behind play and often
view
hindered by players it seems a logical progression to me. We have AR's
who
help on offside and line decisions, yet nothing for what happens in the
box.
How quickly the game would change for the better if players knew they
were
very unlikely to get away with diving.
Has anything like this ever been mooted, it would be an ideal way to
train
lower standard referees to get a handle on all the things a top referee
is
required to see happening, give them a much better insight into what to
look
for when making decisions, simply by getting another perspective.
Regards,
Harry
Jeff's reply
Harry,
You certainly have had your thinking cap on here mate. All very good
ideas,
the unfortunate main point is that there just are not enough officials
to go
round. As we speak the game at all levels does not have enough Refs and if
more
were pushed up into senior football then the grass roots level would
suffer.

To limit the Geordies to derby tickets is another media blunder. Are
MFC
allowed to give unlimited tickets to away fans if they wish? If so get
the
bloody ground filled, never mind standing up etc.
UP THE BORO
Davy
Jeff's reply
At last mate, something we totally agree with. You certainly have it in
for
Gareth Southgate but on this subject you are in my opinion spot on. You
may
recall that last year I did a piece for the Gazette regarding this
subject.
I know that the club is frustrated as it's down to the council and safety
regulations.
We must be the only club in the country that makes such a fuss about
away
fans standing. It happens everywhere else - just watch Match of the Day.
Newcastle United and Manchester United, two sides who could easily
treble
the maximum away allocation are limited to around 1,500 tickets as a
penalty
for their fans remaining standing. It is mad in my opinion. Of course
safety
is paramount but this is pc stupidity.
The ground could be full, a better atmosphere and we would not have to
listen to the Geordie whine of "You couldn't sell all your tickets"

Hi Jeff,
As my club has been endlessly linked with Boro's striker Yakubu, I was just wondering what your honest opinion of him is? Is he worth the reported £11m? Is he as lazy as most people think? Would he be a valuable addition to David Moyes' side?
Thanks. I await your response x
Nil Satis Nisi Optimum
Jeff's reply
Hi Terri,
Nice bit of Latin!! Yakubu has a goal scoring record that any club would be interested in. He scores some brilliant goals and a fair few penalties as well. But other than that during his time at the Boro he has proved that his first touch is terrible, he can't hold a ball up, he can't head the ball and he generally has shown a lack of interest.
Now maybe the last point is because he just does not want to be at the club, but that is no excuse for the other lack of skills he has shown. I know that he has been problematic in the dressing room recently and that is not good for team morale.
I have a lot of time for David Moyes and I know he will not be messed around so for Everton's sake I hope he gets the best out of him.
Boro fans though in the main are glad to see the back of him.

So the fact that the quayside ladies are very easy on the eye is as

Hi - I have read most of your comments and have just read the response
to Alan regarding telling the truth.
So here is my response. I have always supported the Boro but could
never

you
reffed a few games back then in the Northern League. Anyway when I
reached
working age I took a carear in retail and worked every weekend so could
not
got to the games. Three years ago I got a new job with weekends off and the
first purchase was a season ticket for me and my wife.
I have not
missed a
home match for three seasons. I have sat through beating Chelsea, Manchester United,
Arsenal and losing to Villa 4-0, Portsmouth 4-0 and so on but one
thing
never changes and that is my love for the club. I would like to see a
full
house every week but do not want to be sold off to foreign investors
for
that to happen.
I'm sick of hearing people complain. The press and MOTD
slag

How do they expect to get people to go to the Riverside when there is
no
passion from the players on the pitch?
Also the prices are too
expensive. Man
with one child, travel, food, program, bus fares/car parking etc. 60 quid!. A lot
of money! Teesside people are not paid a
fortune, unlike
some footballers. Maybe if they had to work 40 hours for 200 quid they
would
see how lucky they are.
All the best Jeff.
P.S. Come on the Hoops!
Jeff's reply
I disagree about no passion from players - player in singular, Yakubu, and

From Steve Bullock, 15th August 2007
Hi Jeff.
I have a question. Maybe it's already been covered, but if not here goes anyway. When Rochemback was sent off in the pre season friendly why was the ban not served during the rest of the pre season friendlies?
My views are that if a player gets sent off and has to serve a ban it should be for all games after it comes into effect. If it's not the case that the ban does not cover friendlies then it should not be a suspension in the first place.
Hope you can understand where I'm coming from?
PS; Is your mate Dave over 5' 11"? If so can he play at centre back for the Boro on Saturday?
Jeff's reply
For the first time ever Steve you do make sense, sort of!!
The pre season friendly thing is a big query, but it is getting out of hand. Clubs may soon choose to play behind closed doors rather than run the risk. You have to have discipline in these games, because players, especially against foreign sides, often get out of hand. The powers that be will not allow players to be "subbed" so red and yellows have to be issued. But it is stupid that they count as suspensions.
But hey the lunatics are running the asylum.

What more can I say - I hate all refs that don't give Boro the decisions.
But we have to take our hat off for you being part of the conspiracy to get the game with Newcastle postponed a few years back due to snow outside the ground.

Duncan was a true character; I certainly would not have broken into his

I once sent off Gary Flitcroft after two minutes for a challenge on Dunc

saved him from severe retribution.
I loved refereeing at Goodison, also I have a lot of time for David

From Dave Stephenson, 8th August 2007
Hi Jeff,
Can you give me some fitness tips on what you used to do when you were refereeing.
Jeff's reply
Hi Dave,
When we went professional, we trained full time under the supervision of our full time PTI. All of our training was done wearing a heart rate monitor and all results from every match and session was downloaded. We had regular fitness tests and if we were not up to scratch we could not ref.
We had twenty minutes warm up session then followed by a variety of stamina and speed exercises. It was hard work but great fun also. Getting paid well to keep fit and be involved in football at the highest level was brilliant.
I always vowed to keep as fit after retiring, however the After Dinner circuit and the lack of full time training means that the pounds have gone on. It happens to a hell of a lot of people after they finish in sport.
If you are looking to improve your fitness for sport then your training needs to be specific to that sport. Also most importantly, build up gradually, for example to run a marathon you don't start by doing 26 mile runs.
You know all this talk about training has got me in the mood. I think I will go to the gym as they have a new machine in there that I like. It's full of Mars bars etc.
Best Wishes
Jeff
I'm a referee myself Jeff. What sort of things would you advice me to do
to
get my fitness up? I can't seem to pass the fitness test, never been a
long
distance runner and running round a running track for twelve minutes is
boring. Can't get my head round the long distance running.
Dave
You have got a problem mate. But fitness gives credibility to decision
making. If you don't like running cos it is boring, then you have to take
your
mind off it. Headsets with music, do some thinking about things whilst
running. They take your mind off it.
Also with track running, work out
timing for where you should be each 100m. That worked for me. Your mind is
counting, you are pacing yourself and the run seems to go by a lot
quicker.
Running with somebody else is also good, preferably younger and fitter. Your
pride will keep you going longer. Likewise at the gym, surrounded by
young
lovelies you try harder to impress!! It's mind over matter and if I could
do it, so can you.
Best of luck

Jeff,
Going to keep an eye on your site, and always respected your handle on the game.
Big question, and it's very important..
Why do you think you were one of the most respected on-field officials? I've had this conversation many times with Brian Stephens, and he never had a straight answer, other than he was "totally impartial".
Now that's a good answer, but he loved his footie, like the rest of us, and I believe he was a Villa fan.
Did you ever, on duty in a PL game, think, "fook, that's gonna hurt the Boro"?
Say, "Yes" and you're a legend in my book J.
Cheers
Tommo
Jeff's reply
Thanks Stuart,
We are going to update the site very regularly, so hopefully it should always be interesting.
As a referee I always wanted to be respected as opposed to being liked. A referee is not there to be popular or liked. Some might say I was respected others hated me, it's all about opinion.
I always spoke my mind, if players gave it to me large, then they got it back, that I think made me tolerated by many rather than totally detested. I always tried to referee as I perceived a neutral fan would have wanted it, letting the game flow where ever possible and stamping down on the bad stuff.
Me, a legend? Well I am afraid not, Boro fan forever, but when refereeing I was always 100% fair, some in fact many may disagree, but I gave what I saw. I was not intimidated by anyone, fans, Sir Alex or Wenger. I think and hope that my reputation was built on that.
Keep in touch

From Marcus, 4th August 2007
Hi Jeff,
I really like your site, but I've got to say I think you're being way
too
harsh on Viduka.
It's fine to criticize his consistency and call him lazy - but then to
complain that he's leaving in the same letter? Do you want him or not?
The guy wasn't offered a new contract last summer (when it should have
been
sorted out) - not exactly a nice situation for him. Boro took him for
granted, so they lost him.
As a Leeds fan I don't feel he shafted us (what was he supposed to
stay
with us in the championship? For free?). Players have a right to move
on -
especially when they're so obviously disliked by the very fans whose
team
they're trying to rescue from relegation.
Otherwise, keep up the good work Jeff!
Regards,
Marcus
Jeff's reply
Fair points Marcus, the article has really caused a stir with 1,500
hits on
my fmradio.com web log on the day it was released and even more
interest since it went national via this web site.
I am interested in everybody's opinions on this.
He was infuriating as a player, so much talent, when he wanted to
perform.
Yes I was frustrated and most Boro wanted him to stay, but then again
that
was the Viduka who was playing for a new deal/transfer, it will be
interesting to see how he performs this season.
The jist of my letter, was not meant to be totally personal to Mark, I
know
the guy and actually like him, but to put a point of view across about
players who seem to forget what their actions mean to the fans.
Any how as a Leeds fan you probably have more to worry about at the
moment;
their support at Darlington the other night was superb, mind you the
anti-
Chelsea etc songs did go on a bit. Really hope you pull through, the
fans
deserve success, but lay off my old mate Dennis a bit please.
Enjoy your football
Best Wishes

Hi Jeff,
Hope your post-referee career is keeping you busy and filling the gap that retiring from refereeing must have left. Here in Edmonton, we still use much of your input from when you were here in 2003.
There is hardly a meeting or session that goes by without someone answering a question with - "Remember what Jeff said when he was here.....".
All the best!

'Kin 'ell Jeff - snazz or what yer own website and all very smicky and
cool!
Like I said to Steve Goldby with that broody black and white crop shot
photie in the right hand corner, are you angling for a part as a villain
in
the next Bond movie?
I can just see it now, chasing Bond as Red Winter the card throwing
assassin
who has to stop at every pub for a pint!
Good luck with the site Mate and keep being what you are; an
opinionated forthright gobshite who doesn't give a rat's arse about being PC!
Jeff's reply
I should have used your description of me as a banner on the web site.
Don't
know about me getting on Bond films though, birds would be alright, but
I
preferred a baseball bat for fighting.

You should hang your head in shame because you sound like a 12 year old

Funny Peter,
Whilst there are some who agree with your comments, the vast majority
of responses have been in favour of the sentiments of my article.

I think Darlo can reach the playoffs this year with all those good
signings? Where do you think Darlo will finish this season?

I hope that they do better than the playoffs; defence is looking good as is
midfield, just need to start scoring.

Tuesday night was a lot better, defence looked good, movement in midfield; just need to finish.

Firstly, can I say that you and Chris Kamara are my two top Tee Tee
Teessiders!! Lol!!
I wish you were still reffing, the standard seems sooooooo much lower
now.
What did you think of reffing standard v Boro last season?
Up the Boro
Ewan
Jeff's reply,
Hi Ewan,
Thanks for your comments, glad someone likes me.
I think in recent seasons a lot of the most experienced officials have
retired and it takes a bit of time for the newer ones to get experience
and confidence at the highest level. I am sure that given time some
officials will make to transition.

Now that you have your own website, will we all have to get wider
screens?
Jeff's reply,
Just think if me and The Duke were on side by side it would be massive and what about if we got some of those famous fans of yours with the real bellies. It would not fit into St.James's. Enjoy the season.

Now then.
Although we have had our disagreements in the past, must say you are
spot on when you say Dave Penney needs and deserves to be given time.
Although mindless optimism is part of being a Darlo fan, I think its
time that being supportive of our club is too. A lot of our fans have
over-optimistic expectations, and a lot of our fans are going to be
quick to judge DP and get on his back should we not be top of the
league in November.
Personally I will happily accept a few defeats in our opening games, if
it means we are promoted in May next season. Sadly, I think a lot of
fans think we'll be wiping the floor with the opposition every week.
Good to know that you will be supporting our lads, through thick and
thin.
Who knows, I might even give a cheer for the Boro... well i did say
"might".
Jeff's reply
After last night's game v Leeds I am a lot more confident. The defence
looked strong, midfield full of running but I still have my concerns up front
though. However I feel that Abbott would have taken some of those
chances. Oakes a bit dodgy early on, but then a couple of great saves
after that. Here's hoping.

It seems that Jeff's open letter to Mark Viduka has not gone down so well up the A1.
From Stuart Carrington
You're a tw*t. Untalented, useless, hated and fat. Bye
Reply from Jeff
Thanks Stuart,
And your point is !!
I have a simple principle that anyone who contacts me deserves a reply.
Usually having heard their opinion I try and give mine and should we beg to differ then that's life, we are all entitled to an opinion.
Short of going to weight watchers and trying to get an education and learn a skill or perhaps curl up and die it seems that my life serves no purpose.
Still you have an advantage over me as you obviously have heard of me, who are you?
Best Wishes
Jeff
Stuart writes back...
Jeff,
I would honestly like to say thank you for your reply, I did assume that you probably just put your name to something that someone else wrote so I was wrong and I admit that.
I hope we can have a serious conversation now despite my foolish initial email?
I would like to know the following:
a) You make a good point - you don't know me yet I know you, does that make you better than me? I am a lecturer at a College in the field of Sport Science. You were a football referee. You are now a wannabe z-list celebrity (correct me when I am wrong). Who do you think offers more to society? Honestly.
b) Did you referee in an impartial way? It seems that you have a lot of prejudice (meant in the original sense of pre-judgment not with the modern discrimination undertones). This isn't a negative judgment of your refeering, this is purely a question to all referees because obviously I am not one and would therefore like to know how easy or difficult it is to be 'fair'.
c) Why did you decide to go into refereeing?
Many thanks
Stuart
And Jeff replies to the reply...
That's better Stuart,
Your point is a) My response to you was tit for tat to your initial email. Of course whoever I am or whatever I do does not make me better than anyone else. You are obviously an intelligent and successful man and the one thing we have in common is a passion and love for our teams and football in general. I had to laugh at your z list celebrity comment, that is what I refer to myself as. Others though have a different opinion, I have carved out a very successful career on the After Dinner Speaking circuit and won awards to prove it and hey I am not going to apologise for making a living after finishing in the game. When all said and done players do it so why not a referee. I like them and indeed your self are entitled to an opinion. Who does more for society, I do not know, we both carry out a role that obviously is very important to different people otherwise we would not be working. What is more who cares, as long as you your friends and family are happy with you then the opinions of others do not really matter.
b) As a referee I tried to be impartial, obviously I made mistakes, but they were honest one's and my decisions were never going to be universally accepted, because the nature of the beast gives all fans rose coloured spectacles and at times a very biased viewpoint.
c) I became a referee because basically I was shite at playing football, loved the game and needed to get away from the terrace problems of the 70's (Read chapter 1 of my book, plug, plug.)
I consider myself very fortunate to have shared pitches with some of the world's greatest players and loved every minute of it. Not bad for a some one as fat, untalented and useless as me !!
Since refereeing I have had plenty of work and given that my comments and columns are requested rather than offered it seemed sensible to move into radio with TFM and also have a web site. Some, your self included might accuse me of being a publicity seeking self opinionated tosser, but hey, that's life we are all entitled to an opinion.
keep in touch
Best Wishes

And finally...
Jeff ive got to hand it to you fair play for your reply. No offence but I used to hate it when you reffed us. Funny enough we won quite a few games you took charge of.
I agree with alot of your points, but as for your comment on Newcastle not being a big club I would say that during the Keegan era the media made a great fuss about us being this great big club etc So its not necessarily all of our fans that believe this. I would put it as we have the potential to be massive rather than we are massive.
If I tell you the truth im quite bitter about Chopra signing for Sunderland. Not because he is great because the lad is a geordie born and bred. I couldnt bring myself to play in that strip and for them supporters.
On things Boro been to the riverside a few times. I dont really have anything against Boro. I would be very excited about Tuncay sanli I have heard so many good things about him, ive been to Turkey a few times and the Fenerbahce fans rave about him, Dont know if you have seen the you tube videos of him aswell I think hes a steal for free. As for Jonathan Woodgate I was really pleased to see him stay fit for most of the season im sure you will agree he is the best around. I dont believe John Terry is as good as hes made out (London press hyped) and his mate Lampard is useless. Anyway Hope Woodgate continues to stay fit. Wish he was in the black and white.
Good luck Jeff

From Kevin Pearce
JEFF WINTER YOUR CLUELESS MARK VIDUKA IS THE BOY! YOUR BITTER AND TWISTED AND JEALOUS OF NEWCASTLE AS A CLUB AND A CITY!
Far from it Kevin,
I love the city, those girls on the quayside are a sight for sore eyes, also I have a tremendous amount of respect for Newcastle United and their long suffering fans. I loved refereeing there because of the atmosphere and the passion.
As a Boro fan and a radio presenter it is good to have banter between the local sides. I just wish that we were more successful in the North east, the supporters of all our clubs deserve success. The southern media love to knock our part of the world and it is totally unjustified.
Don't get me wrong I would have loved Viduka to have stayed at the Boro, he is quality, the only trouble is that seems to play when it suits him. If you read my article you will see that I passed the comments that he did not meet up to great players the Toon have had e.g. Shearer and Milburn, to name but two.
I am sure that if the boot were on the other foot and a player had dumped you and signed for Sunderland purely for money you would have similar feelings to me, it is the genuine fan who is being shafted once again.
The one thing that guiles me about Newcastle and some of their fans, is that they have this arrogant attitude that they are a big club. Sure you have a big ground, a huge catchment area and a very large loyal fan base. But look at the history books, you will not be considered to be a big club until you start winning things. Hopefully for the loyal Toon fans it will be sooner than later and your new owner is going to have to dig deep to match the money mad antics of Chelsea etc.
It can be done though one in a while, just look at that small town in Europe down the coast, carling Cup winners and Eufa Cup finalists.
Thanks for your comments.
Best Wishes

But there is also a lot of support amongst the vitriol...
Hi Jeff,
My name is Andy Wilson and I'm a Boro season ticket holder.
Just thought I'd drop you a quick note regarding your letter to Mr Viduka. I thought it was spot on, good to see someone in a respected position like yourself telling it as it is. I'd be interested to know whether he'll reply. Got me doubts like!
Gonna ask but won't hold my breath with a positive response but have you heard anything about any new signings at all? Worrying times so far if I'm honest, could do with a few replacements, especially right side.
Anyway quality letter mate and Up the Boro.
Cheers
Andy
Jeff's reply
Hi Andy,
Judging by my mail box, a few Geordies have wiped me off their Christmas card list.
I agree we desperately need some more quality signings, but it's all rumour about every other club, Sunderland after Graveson and Kewell but all quiet of the Boro front.
It could be a long hard season unless Tuncay turns out to be a Berbatov, let's hope. I am back on air from 4th August and looking forward to it.
Best Wishes

From Aaron Broome
Dear Jeff,
I apologise, you tend to get on my nerves a bit and I thought as ref's go you were erratic to say the least.
But well done on ripping that greedy, mercenary Aussie scum bag to bits on behalf of true fans. Trouble is that applies to so many players now who are raping true fans on a daily basis.
I am an Oldham fan, and like all football league clubs our ambition is to be ever stifled by the abhorrent riches of the Premier League which now are creating their own clique of about 30 teams. Football has lost its soul and although fans were always second class citizens to the men in the boardroom, it has sunk to new lows in the ways these prima donna's show total disregard to the paying public.
Your letter on behalf of the club you support reminds me of the time Oldham played Middlesbrough in the old Division 2 late eighties, early nineties. We met Bernie Slaven in the Clayton Arms at the back of the Chaddy End and he was 110% a true loyal, passionate and devoted player to your cause. He then went on to famously bare his backside when you beat the Manc's one time . . . priceless!
Great letter, great sentiments, well done.
Aaron Broome
Thanks for email Aaron,
Erratic, I was called worse that that in my time. despite being a referee I never stopped being a fan. I remember many a game at Oldham especially on that bloody plastic pitch. My email has upset a few Geordies, but if they read it they would have seen that it was not anti- Newcastle, it was as you say a letter that I believe most fans can concur with. You might be interested to know that wef 1st August my web site will be up and running www.jeffwinterentertainmentandmedia.co.uk that will include the many media articles I am asked to do. Best Wishes Jeff Hi Jeff,
Glad to see you haven't lost your touch. Just read the open letter to Viduka and love it. You said what 25,000 Boro fans have been thinking. Well done you!!
Now you can turn your attention back to slagging off the Yak again.
Look forward to listening to you again on the way back from the matches.
Kind regards
Anne Harris
Catterick
ps My husband is back safe and sound from Iraq now so all is well.
Jeff's reply
Hi Anne,
Glad that he back home safe and sound, he deserves the £70,000 a week that the Duke is getting.
Some Geordie's have not shared my opinions of Viduka, time will tell.
With regard to the Yak, I hope he proves me wrong, as we are going to desperately need his goals.
Looking forward to the start of the season.
Best Wishes
Jeff

My feelings exactly James, unfortunately, I have to choose my words more carefully because of the rules of radio and the media.
Despite the fact that Boro are going to miss him and we really do need to make some more signings.
The shows are back on air on 4th August and I hope that you tune in.
