JEFF'S LEAGUE OF INJUSTICE FOR WEEKEND 16-8-08
The perception amongst fans and managers is that over the course of a
season, refereeing decisions can cost clubs dearly.
I cannot disagree with this entirely because incorrect decisions do have an effect
on results. However, so many other things go on during a game of football that also
have an effect.
However, it is popular to blame the refs for anything and everything so I will
humour you and correct scores and results based on my reading of
incidents.
Remember though, this referee's decision is final. But if you want to raise a point,
let me know by contacting me.

In a weekend where we only had twenty-two cautions and no sending offs in
the ten games played, respect was evident and football as a whole was better for
it.
There were, however, two result changing errors and two score amendments that need
to be made to rectify incorrect decisions.

Chelsea v Portsmouth:
Deco's excellent debut and last minute goal could and should have ended after
only a few minutes. His tackle was far from clever and he was fortunate not to pick
up a red card.
In the same game, there were a couple of handball claims in the penalty
area.
The first one was given and led to Chelsea's third goal. The incident was on
the referee's blind side and was given by his assistant. I can understand why it was
given as from his angle, he saw that Distin's left hand was away from his
body and it looked a clear handball. However, we could all see that Distin had
pulled his right arm away from the ball and turned his back. The ball hit his other
hand and there was absolutely no intent, it was accidental.
Later on in the game though, Carvalho dived to block a shot with his arms extended
and this should have been penalty.
Verdict: 3-1 to Chelsea instead of 4-0

Middlesbrough v Tottenham Hotspur
At the Riverside, Boro should have beaten Spurs far more convincingly than the 2-1
scoreline suggested.
David Wheater scored Boro's first goal but in fact it should have been his
second. He had one ruled out in the first half as he wrestled Dawson away from him.
I assume this is what the ref saw because what he didn't see was Dawson
committing the initial offence by ripping the shirt off Wheater's back.
Therefore, the goal should have stood.
Verdict: 3-1 to Boro instead of 2-1

Manchester United v Newcastle United
Newcastle put up an excellent display at Old Trafford against Manchester United who,
like last season, are off to a slow start and are not yet firing on all
cylinders.
However, Manchester United should have had a penalty early on when Milner handled
from a free kick inside the penalty area. So unfortunately, whilst Newcastle
deserved their point, United should have won.
Verdict: 2-1 to Manchester United instead of
1-1

Everton v Blackburn Rovers
Last season, Everton had a lot to complain about in the League of Injustice. In
fact, they should have qualified for the Champions League instead of Liverpool on my
revised results.
They were also hard done by against Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.
I again have sympathy for the assistant referee who did what he is supposed to do
and not flag a player offside for merely being in an offside position. The problem
came when the same player actually headed the ball in the box as it was impossible
in the crowded penalty area for him to be spotted and given offside.
That is a fact, but the truth of the matter is that the law is an ass, the goal
should not have been allowed and Everton and Blackburn would have shared the
points.
Verdict: A 2-2 draw instead of 3-2 to Blackburn
